Carmel Highlands Rustic Elegance

163.5 Spindrift Road, Carmel Highlands

Offered at $19,675,000

Very rarely does something truly magical come to the market. Even more rare is a property wherein the architectural ethos and the natural setting seem predestined for each other—a match, as they say, made in heaven. 163.5 Spindrift Road is precisely such a place. A dream brought to realization by an assemblage of the finest craftsmen combined with the vision of architect Larry Pearson, who first articulated the genre of “Rustic Elegance” when reviving the Rockefeller’s historic Ranch House inside of Teton National Park.

Every detail of this unrepeatable, bespoke 2 bedroom, 2.5 bath luxury getaway, is a perfect pairing of the rugged with the refined. Mammoth fireplaces crescendo 4+ tons of mossy-lichened boulders forged from the plains of Montana, masterfully placed to create one-of-a-kind walls, hearths, lintels, and mantels. Venetian-style lime plaster walls glow in the Carmel Highlands' golden light alongside hand-hewn timber beams, custom barn wood and brass doors, antique French oak flooring, salvaged black walnut planks, and Idaho quartzite flagstone. The chef's kitchen is a true work of art, featuring one-of-a-kind poplar bark cabinetry.

Carefully curated, eclectic, and antique furniture and accessories were chosen to enhance every inch of the interior spaces. Each choice was made to add warmth and comfort while complementing the setting, with expansive ocean views, a protected courtyard, and an outdoor fireplace overlooking a grassy amphitheater. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to acquire one of the most desirable pieces of luxury real estate on the West Coast of North America.

Grounds & Gardens

The beautifully landscaped ocean-facing grounds are framed by stone walls and meandering pathways. Moss-covered boulders, floating flagstone steps, and lush plantings of ferns, wildflowers, lavender, succulents, and ornamental grasses create a serene coastal retreat. Multiple seating areas offer picturesque views of the surrounding natural landscape.

Masterful Masonry

Perhaps the primary emblem of craftsmanship across the property is its stonework. The Master Masons toiled tirelessly to give each stone its purposeful place. The result is one-of-a-kind.

Bespoke Finishes

The beauty of the architecture and interior finishes are accentuated by combining the rustic with the refined. Most of the walls are composed of a three-coat lime based (Venetian style) plaster that reflects light more amply. These plaster walls are juxtaposed with rugged hand-hewn timber beams and rough wood finishes such as barn wood and aged corral board. Most of the wood floors are composed of unique imported antique French Oak “Ardeche” patterned squares, while other floors come from super-wide Black Walnut planks salvaged from a barn in Ohio that was torn down. They were aged to perfection by centuries of farm stock and stomping barn undulate. A variety of stone floors also reside next to the wood floors and have primarily been composed with a custom mixture of light gray, charcoal gray, and chocolate gray Idaho quartzite’s. Lastly, carefully curated antique furniture pieces were chosen to enhance the interiors. The intention behind these choices were to bring richness and texture to the homes while complementing the innate beauty of the environment.

Stone-scape by the Sea

By Gary R Vickers, Owner

When my grandchildren’s children

Return from an enchanting Big Sur excursion

Freshly imbibed by its stupendous natural beauty

And they cross the half-barreled vertigo expanse

Over Bixby Creek north to the Carmel Highlands

Down the winding narrow gauges of Spindrift Road

Just-round-the-corner… past Ansel Adams’ place

They will be greeted by a timeworn capsule

A Sea-etched Citadel …
